Registration is now open for the first annual YWCA of Minneapolis Women’s Triathlon.

The sprint distance event (500 yard swim, 15 mile bike, 5K run) is set for Sunday, August 17 at Baker Park in Maple Plain, Minn. According to race directors, Paul Johnson and Jan Guenther, the race is expected to quickly reach its limit of 500 participants. The event is designed to bring together and celebrate the strength of women of all ages and abilities.

As part of its endurance sports program and to support the race, the YWCA has added new running and triathlon classes to supplement its Total Immersion swim technique program. Johnson, an exercise physiologist, certified triathlon coach and former college track coach is heading up the new classes.

Participants must be at least 15 years old on race day. Register before June 1 and pay $65. Early registrants are also entered in a drawing to win a Tyr Transition bag from Gear West Bike and Triathlon, a Moving Comfort jog bra from Gear West Run and a massage from the YWCA.
