The Agony of the Trials

After smoking the field with a (wind-aided) 9.68 in the 100 meters, Tyson Gay looked to be the big story of the Olympic Trials this year as the 200 meters approached. He would be the big story, just not for the reasons he had hoped.

Running Away Takes over Lake Zurich Tri

Running Away Multisport has acquired the Lake Zurich Triathlon, which this year will be moved to Wauconda and renamed the Bangs Lake Multisport Festival.

In addition to the Olympic-distance triathlon, the event also will feature a duathlon (run-bike-run) and an aqua-bike (swim-bike). All the races will take place in and around Wauconda’s Cook Park on Aug. 10.

“We just thought that Wauconda offered a much better location for triathletes,” said Paul Rosenblum of Running Away Multisport. “It’s a quaint town and offers much better roads for the bike leg. It’s just a nicer venue.”

Road construction led to the cancellation of the popular Lake Zurich Triathlon in 2006, but the race returned to the same location last year. The new location has allowed more flexibility in adding additional elements to the event.

“Lake Zurich is a privately owned lake, so we were limited to what could do there,” Rosenblum said. “In Wauconda, we have more time to work with, so we can do things like the duathlon and aqua bike.”

The swim will take place at Bangs Lake, a 309-acre natural glacial lake that sits in the center of Wauconda. The scenic but challenging bike leg offers rolling hills, and the run will include a double loop in and around Cook Park.

The event will be limited to 1,000 participants, and the first 500 to register will receive a limited edition tie-dyed T-shirt. If you’re not quite up the 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run of the Olympic distance race, the Wauconda Sprint Triathlon takes place two weeks earlier at the same location.
