If current figures are an accurate predictor, the 2008 U.S. Air Force Marathon appears well on its way to shattering last year's registration record of more than 6,700 runners.
As of June 13, the total number or runners registered for the event stood at 2,326, as opposed to 1,013 registered runners at the same time one year ago. The 12th annual event will take place on Sept. 20 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
Molly Louden, the marathon's director, said that enhanced marketing and publicity efforts combined with strong word-of-mouth from previous marathon participants is helping fuel the surge in registration.
"Word of mouth is a huge factor, and the marathon has received fantastic reviews from past runners on running blogs like marathonguide.com," said Louden.
Louden said runners planning to participate in this year's marathon are encouraged to register early, considering the significant increase in registrants to date. "This is the first year we might have to close registration due to the number of registrants," she said. For planning purposes, race organizers will close registration as it nears the 10,000 mark.
A prominent change to the marathon is the phase-out of the four-person relay teams and the introduction of a 10K race. Runners registering for the 10K can do so as individuals or as part of a four-person team.
