Along with static stretching, which is the process of passively taking a muscle to the point of tension and holding for 20 seconds, there is a less common form of flexibility training called Self Myofascial Release Stretching (SMFR).  SMFR is the process of utilizing bio-foam rollers to improve soft tissue extensibility.

The SMFR technique can be used to alleviate tenderness in the pained areas by applying external pressure with the bio-foam roller along the trigger point.  Research has shown that when applied in conjunction with stretching techniques, SMFR helps increase range of motion and allows the muscles to relax and increase blood flow.
